Zondacrypto affair: Wipler denies involvement in legislative work on cryptocurrencies
The National Prosecutor's Office is investigating links between the Zondacrypto exchange and the foundation of Confederation MP Przemysław Wipler. The politician denies active participation in the legislative process.
Wipler responds to prosecutor's allegations in Zondacrypto case
The National Prosecutor's Office, according to Interia, has issued a statement regarding the investigation into the activities of the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange. In their communication, investigators pointed to one of the examined aspects — links between the company and the foundation of Confederation MP Przemysław Wipler.
"On the basis of evidence secured in the case, the Prosecutor's Office is verifying information obtained during proceedings concerning the possibility of committing crimes in connection with financing by Zondacrypto (...) the foundation of Przemysław Wipler and other persons cooperating with him, in connection with the ongoing legislative process concerning the cryptocurrency market," the prosecutors stated.
Wipler published his own statement on social media in which he rejected the suggestion of active participation in the creation of legislation regulating the cryptocurrency market.
"At no stage did I participate proactively in the legislative process except that I voted in the plenary session in accordance with the official position of the parliamentary club," the MP stated. He noted that the club's position was determined without his participation.
"I did not submit amendments to this act at any stage and did not take part in consulting amendments submitted by other MPs. Additionally, I never contacted representatives of the President's Office regarding this act," Wipler added.
Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek informed the Sejm on Tuesday that in the investigation concerning Zondacrypto there had been "a breakthrough". He qualified this by noting that details would be revealed to the public only after appropriate procedural preparation.
Citizen Coalition MP Roman Giertych stated that in May, together with lawyer Jacek Dubois, he took on the role of authorised representative of Przemysław Kral — the head of the Zondacrypto exchange. Giertych informed that Kral had placed at the disposal of the prosecutor's office "vast assets", which together with property previously secured by law enforcement should be sufficient to satisfy all victims.
On Monday, media reported that Kral had already been informed of charges of involvement in fraud connected with Zondacrypto's operations. The man was said to have begun cooperation with the prosecutor's office, counting on an exceptional mitigation of his sentence and the status of a small crown witness.
