Rape and robbery in Częstochowa from 24 years ago: DNA leads to arrest of 52-year-old
After 24 years, investigators from Częstochowa have detained Andrzej Z., suspected of rape and robbery from 2002. DNA evidence secured a three-month remand; he faces up to 12 years in prison.

According to Google News PL, police and prosecutors from Częstochowa announced on Tuesday a breakthrough in the case of a brutal assault from nearly 24 years ago. Andrzej Z. (52 years old) was detained on 25 August in one of the flats in the Szczecin area and remanded in custody for three months.
The crime occurred on the evening of 12 June 2002. A 43-year-old resident of Częstochowa was returning home from work; after exiting a bus and walking between apartment buildings, she was attacked by an unknown man. The assailant reportedly dragged the woman into nearby bushes, struck her on the head, committed rape, and then took money from her handbag.
Biological traces were secured at the scene, however despite investigative measures carried out at the time, the identity of the perpetrator could not be established. The proceedings were discontinued due to the assailant not being apprehended.
After years, officers returned to the case files. "A detailed analysis of the case materials conducted by them and investigative measures undertaken made it possible to establish that the perpetrator of the act is the 52-year-old," the Częstochowa police stated in a statement.
Biological material was taken from the detainee for DNA testing. The spokesperson of the District Prosecutor's Office in Częstochowa, Tomasz Ozimek, informed that the opinion obtained in the field of forensic genetics confirmed the match between the DNA profile of Andrzej Z. and the profile secured at the scene of the event in 2002.
The District Prosecutor's Office in Częstochowa-South presented the man with charges of rape, robbery, and causing minor bodily injury, committed under conditions of recidivism, added Prosecutor Ozimek. Questioned in his capacity as a suspect, Andrzej Z. did not admit guilt and refused to provide explanations.
On 26 August, the Częstochowa court, at the request of the prosecutor's office, imposed temporary remand in custody on the suspect for three months. The alleged crime carries a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
