Fatal beating in Kraków: 16-year-old was on leave from educational centre, court orders return

As Interia established, 16-year-old Jakub L. – the first person arrested in connection with the fatal beating in the Willowy estate in Kraków – was on leave from an educational centre at the time of the incident. The court overseeing his stay in the closed facility subsequently ordered his immediate return.
The boy was arrested on Monday. On Wednesday he was brought before the Kraków family court. The hearing was closed and lasted only seven minutes. Before it began, police officers were also asked to leave the courtroom – as Polsat News reporter Dominika Orzeł established unofficially.
Initially, media reports appeared stating that the court had not applied any measures provided by law against the teenager – neither placement in a shelter for minors nor supervision – and that Jakub L. was to be released. These reports proved imprecise.
According to Dominika Orzeł's findings, the court initiated proceedings concerning delinquency or the commission of a criminal act and found there were grounds for further investigation into the teenager's involvement in the incident. The court did not apply new educational measures because Jakub L. is already a resident of a closed facility – and his leave was to end immediately. The court overseeing the facility issued an order for his immediate return.
In the police's assessment, the evidence gathered indicates that the 16-year-old participated in the beating. Wirtualna Polska also reported that Jakub L. was identified by one of the witnesses to the incident.
The tragedy occurred during the night of 20 to 21 August in the Willowy estate in Kraków's Nowa Huta district. Five men carried out a brutal attack on 36-year-old Jakub C., alias Yankes – a leader of Hutnik Kraków supporters. The attackers used machetes and gas sprayers. For over four minutes they kicked and beat the defenceless man lying on the ground – the entire incident was recorded by surveillance cameras.
An unconscious Jakub C. was found by a passer-by, who called the emergency services. The man died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.
According to the police, the main suspects in the case are members of so-called Młoda Ferajna – a fighting group linked to supporters of Wisła Kraków.
