The District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski concluded the evidence-taking phase in the trial of Sebastian M., accused of causing a fatal accident on the A1 motorway in September 2023. As established by the o2.pl editorial team, closing arguments have been scheduled for 7 October at 9:00 a.m. – immediately after which the first-instance verdict is to be delivered. The court simultaneously extended the accused's remand in custody until 1 February 2027.
Monday's hearing, which lasted nine hours, was dominated by the examination of expert witnesses specialising in the reconstruction of road accidents. At the defence's request, experts Marek Długosz, Jakub Curyło and Bogusław Śleziak gave testimony. Their opinion was unequivocal: the experts ruled out the version promoted by the defence that the driver of the Kia had cut off the speeding BMW. According to the findings of investigators from the District Prosecutor's Office in Katowice, Sebastian M. was driving on the motorway at a speed exceeding 300–320 km/h, and the collision occurred at approximately 250 km/h.
Defence files 35 pages of motions – court rejects all of them
Towards the end of the nine-hour hearing, Sebastian M.'s defence counsel, attorney Katarzyna Hebda, announced that she would be filing numerous and extensive evidentiary motions. The defence prepared approximately 15 motions spanning 35 pages, including demands to contact external entities for additional information, to conduct an examination of camera recordings, and to admit another expert witness specialising in video analysis.
The prosecution moved to reject all motions in their entirety. The presiding judge, Renata Folkman, sided with the prosecution, stating in her ruling that the defence motions contribute nothing to the case and their only purpose is to prolong proceedings. Subsequently, Judge Folkman officially closed the court proceedings.
Flight, extradition and return to Poland
In the A1 motorway accident in September 2023, a three-person family died – parents and a child not yet five years old. After being struck by the speeding BMW, their Kia hit the barriers and immediately caught fire.
Sebastian M. (born 1991) left Poland shortly after the accident. He travelled to Germany, from there overland to Turkey, and then flew to the United Arab Emirates. Following a several-month-long extradition procedure, he returned to the country in May 2025. The trial before the District Court in Piotrków Trybunalski began in September 2025. He faces a sentence of up to 8 years' imprisonment for causing an accident resulting in death.
