Identity of man with remains found in Ciechanów established
The Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the identity of a man whose remains were discovered in August on the outskirts of Ciechanów. Genetic testing and items found with the remains led to a breakthrough in the investigation.
Prosecutor's Office confirms identity of found man
According to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, the Prosecutor's Office in Ciechanów has established the identity of a man whose remains were discovered in early August. The man was from the Ostrołęka area and was homeless at the time of his death. Genetic testing and additional circumstances related to the discovery enabled identification.
Bartosz Maliszewski, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Płock, explained that the results of biological tests and other accompanying circumstances proved useful in establishing the identity. He noted at the same time that he cannot disclose more detailed information in the course of the current proceedings.
Path to discovery of remains
The remains were discovered during a macabre walk with a dog. A couple of Ciechanów residents found a fragment of a hand in a state of decomposition on 1 August at a fence of a property on Płocka Street. The police who were notified began searching the surrounding area.
The next day, several hundred metres away, skeletal remains of a man were found in bushes, partially clothed. There were no identity documents with the remains. However, the police and Prosecutor's Office used other items found with the remains – a notebook and a mobile phone – to narrow down the search.
Cause of death established as natural
An autopsy did not reveal the cause of death due to the advanced state of decomposition of the remains. However, investigators found no injuries indicating the involvement of third parties. Prosecutor Maliszewski confirmed that everything points to natural death. "There is no evidence that it could have been otherwise," said the prosecutor's spokesperson.
Earlier inspection at the discovery site showed no traces of mechanical injuries. The Prosecutor's Office indicated that the fragment of hand discovered earlier in the same area was not severed as a result of human action, but as a result of animal activity.
Status of investigation
Proceedings were initiated under Article 155 of the Penal Code – unintentional causing of death, which is standard practice in such cases. The investigation is still ongoing, but the Prosecutor's Office assured that it should be concluded soon. Prosecutor Maliszewski further noted that on the basis of current findings, the man could have died in winter, as evidenced by the clothing discovered with the remains.
