Puerto Rico's highest judicial body dismissed the requests presented by the legal representatives of Anthonieska Avilés Cabrera to interrupt the criminal proceedings against her, according to a statement from Lourdes Gómez Torres, head of the Department of Justice.
Through this ruling, the decision of the lower court remains in effect, which enables the prosecution of the defendant for first-degree aggravated homicide in connection with the death of Gabriela Nicole Pratts Rosario, the official clarified in written statements.
The accused faces the charge on the premise that she caused death intentionally and consciously, Gómez Torres said. Likewise, the ruling regarding the defendant's capacity to understand the nature of the proceedings against her and to cooperate with her defence lawyers also remains unchanged.
The Secretary of Justice emphasised that the institution under her charge will work to ensure that the case is handled with the rigour, empathy and promptness that it deserves. "We will not rest until we bring justice to Gabriela Nicole and her family," the official stated, reiterating the responsibility to safeguard the rights of citizens and those harmed by criminal acts.
