André Ventura will be heard as a witness in the case investigating the alleged invasion and vandalism of his office at the Assembly of the Republic, according to SIC Notícias on Tuesday. Observador confirmed that two other MPs — Francisco Gomes and Paulo Seco — were also called to testify.
Because they are members of Parliament, the court had to request authorisation from the Assembly of the Republic before being able to hear them at trial. The request has already been submitted to the Assembly, which, in an initial analysis, considered the request "somewhat generic" and asked that the reasons for Ventura's summons and the purpose of the case be specified.
Given that Ventura appears in the capacity of a witness and not as a defendant, no deliberation by the Commission for Transparency and Status of MPs is necessary. That vote would be required only if the Chega leader had been constituted as a defendant.
The case originates from the events of 28 July, the date on which Ventura's office at the Assembly of the Republic was subjected to an act of vandalism. The deputy himself reported what happened through a post on social network X.
The National Counter-Terrorism Unit (UNCT) of the Judicial Police assumed the investigation and travelled to Parliament to gather evidence related to the incident. At the end of July, the Public Prosecution Service confirmed the opening of an inquiry into the alleged invasion and theft, following the discovery of the case.
