In the early hours of Saturday, officers from the GNR's Coastal Control and Borders Unit, based in Olhão in the Algarve, spotted a vessel that aroused suspicions in the region's waters. The security force officers immediately began tracking it.

During the operation, the officers discovered a car carrying a massive amount of cocaine — approximately three thousand kilogrammes. Upon realising the presence of the authorities, the presumed traffickers attempted to flee, but instead abandoned the vehicle and continued their escape on foot.

As of now, no suspects have been detained. The investigation has been handed over to the Judicial Police, which is now seeking to determine the origin of the drugs and identify those responsible for the smuggling operation.
