António Oliveira and Blanca Oliveira, a couple convicted of leaving an elderly woman to die from malnutrition, have lodged an appeal of the sentence to the Évora Court of Appeal. The defendants contest the sentences imposed on them and maintain that they did not intend to cause the death of the victim.
The case dates back to December 2024, when the couple was arrested and placed in pre-trial detention. During proceedings, it was established that the elderly woman bore marks on her body and was in an extremely malnourished state, indicative of serious neglect and lack of care over an extended period.
The defence of the accused now denies that there was any intention to commit homicide, arguing that the woman's death resulted from omission rather than a deliberate purpose to kill. The appeal will now be reviewed by the higher court, which will decide on whether the conviction should be upheld or altered.
The couple has remained in prison since the end of last year, awaiting the outcome of the proceedings in the second instance.
