Digital criminals have set up webpages that replicate the appearance of official shops to capture pre-order payments for the highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto VI, causing losses to Portuguese consumers.
The official release of the title is scheduled for 19 November, but the possibility of advance reservation began on 25 June. Since that date, fraudulent schemes have proliferated on the web, targeting franchise enthusiasts.
Kaspersky, a company specialised in information security, detected the creation of domains that replicate with great fidelity the design and visual elements of legitimate platforms. These portals include genuine promotional videos and authentic screenshots, inviting visitors to make reservations for different gaming platforms. When pressing the purchase button, internet users are redirected to forms where they must enter personal information and credit card details. After the transaction, some buyers saw their bank accounts completely emptied.
Among the counterfeits discovered, a portal in Portuguese language stands out that presents itself as the official PlayStation store.
The Grand Theft Auto franchise ranks among the most lucrative in the video game industry. Founded in 1997 by producer Rockstar Games, the five previous releases achieved combined sales of 470 million units globally. The immediate predecessor, GTA V, generated revenues exceeding one billion euros in just the first three days following its release in 2013. The gaming community has been awaiting the new chapter for approximately 13 years.
