A 27-year-old man of Irish nationality was detained by the Public Security Police (PSP) after violently assaulting officers from that force at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon. The incident occurred on Monday.
According to information released by the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), officers intervened following an incident involving a passenger who allegedly had already assaulted other professionals at the airport, including two security guards. During the police intervention, one of the officers was seriously injured and had to be transported to hospital.
The suspect was detained by the PSP and held in the COMETLIS detention cells, awaiting a court appearance. The minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, described the situation as "particularly serious" and stressed that "when you attack a police officer, you attack society as a whole". The official also expressed "deep repudiation of any attack on a police officer" and solidarity with the officers involved.
The minister also referred to another incident that occurred on the same day in a commercial establishment in Amadora, where a PSP officer "compromised his physical integrity in order to enforce the law". The circumstances that led to the incident at the airport are under investigation by the competent authorities.
