Coimbra: man arrested by PSP following series of robberies and stolen-car escape
Authorities arrested a man on Tuesday in the Alto de São João neighbourhood in Coimbra, who is accused of committing several robberies in that city during the past week. The arrest was carried out by officers from the Public Security Police, after GNR military personnel initiated a pursuit.
According to the local PSP account, the man was approached in the morning because he was driving a vehicle that was on the list of stolen cars. The individual managed to escape on three separate occasions from arrest attempts by PSP officers. On those occasions, he used other equally stolen vehicles to flee.
The police force emphasised that during the escape attempts, the arrested man endangered the lives of citizens on the road and threatened the physical safety of the officers themselves.
After finally being captured, he was taken to Coimbra University Hospital Centre due to head injuries. Once medical attention was completed, he was placed under GNR custody.
The PSP did not disclose how many robberies he committed or what items were stolen.
