Lígia Correia, who has maintained a relationship with former prime minister José Sócrates for approximately 15 years, chose not to speak during a court session on Wednesday, in the context of Operation Marquês. The decision was made following consideration and legal advice.
Upon reading a prepared statement, the former government official's partner explained that her refusal aimed to safeguard the privacy of the relationship she has maintained with Sócrates since December 2015, when he left Évora prison. "I do not intend to participate in the public exposure of my life", she stated, adding that she is willing to bear the consequences of her position.
The court, following a request from the Public Prosecution Service, determined the extraction of a record due to the refusal to testify, as there was no legal basis that justified the silence. The measure may result in a charge of refusal to give evidence.
