An infant of just three months of age died following severe physical assaults, with the presumed perpetrator being the partner of the child's paternal grandmother. The crime took place in Vila Nova de São Bento, a locality in the municipality of Serpa, in the district of Beja.
According to information disclosed by Correio da Manhã, the baby was a victim of "violent physical abuse" that inflicted fatal injuries. The child was shaken with such violence that it suffered lethal damage.
The family, which resided in the area, was described by a neighbour as apparently "normal", giving no indication of problems that could have foreshadowed a tragedy of this nature. The case shocked the local community, where the perpetrator and the victim's family lived.
The Judicial Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the crime, including the family context and any previous history of violence within the household. The suspect was detained and will be brought before judicial interrogation for the application of restraint measures.
