Sentenced to five years and ten months for attempted murder of GNR officer in Cabeceiras de Basto

The Guimarães Court sentenced a man to an effective prison sentence for attempting to kill a GNR officer with a modified shotgun. The judgment has not yet become final.

Defendant points modified shotgun at GNR officer and is sentenced to almost six years in prison

The Central Criminal Court of Guimarães sentenced a man to five years and ten months of effective imprisonment for the attempted qualified murder of a GNR officer in Cabeceiras de Basto, district of Braga, the District Public Prosecutor's Office of Porto (PGDP) reported.

According to the PGDP, the judgment is dated 22 September and has not yet become final. In addition to the attempted qualified murder, the court convicted the defendant of possession of a prohibited weapon and damage, imposing a single effective sentence.

The court established as proven that the defendant modified a two-barrelled hunting shotgun — making it easily portable and capable of concealment — at a date between the death of his father and 12 June 2025.

On that day, at 14:20, the man went to an adjacent plot of land carrying in a handcart a knife of 33 centimetres — of which 21 centimetres was blade — and the modified shotgun, loaded with two cartridges of 20-millimetre calibre and kept in a bag, ready to fire.

Three GNR officers, properly uniformed, had been called to the location by neighbours. The defendant took the bag, inserted his right hand inside, grabbed the shotgun by the stock and pointed it at the abdominal area of one of the officers, according to a note published by the PGDP.

The officer noticed the presence of the barrels, raised the alarm and became involved in physical confrontation with the defendant. The man actively attempted to reach the trigger to fire whilst the three officers attempted to deflect the weapon and immobilise him. The court concluded that the defendant acted with the intention of taking the officer's life, a result that did not occur due to the victim's defensive reaction and that of the other officers.

The panel of judges also awarded, ex officio, compensation of five thousand euros in favour of the GNR officer for non-pecuniary damages, fear and distress suffered.

Forfeiture to the State of all weapons, ammunition, knives and explosive and incendiary devices seized from the defendant was equally decreed, and he remains in pre-trial detention.

RTP reports that the decision was made public by the PGDP in a note released on its official internet page.
