Arrest following fatal stabbing in Madeira
Authorities detained a man this morning following a crime that resulted in the death of a neighbour on Avenida Nova Cidade in Câmara de Lobos. The arrest occurred shortly after the incident, thanks to joint operations by the PSP and Judicial Police, as reported by DIÁRIO.
The crime took place in a public space, where the attacker inflicted blows with a blade against the victim. Local Volunteer Firefighters and the emergency medical team attended the scene and attempted to resuscitate the injured person. He was subsequently taken in serious condition to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, where he died shortly after.
Both individuals shared the same building, living in neighbouring flats. Between them there was a series of prolonged friction, which had also involved other family members.
The presumed murderer was already known to security forces on account of previous criminal records. Evidence suggests that he had intimidated the victim on other occasions, with it falling to the competent authorities to determine whether such threats preceded the fatal attack.
The PSP took charge of initial operations and cordoned off the crime scene, with the investigation subsequently handed to the Judicial Police. Investigators will now gather evidence, interview potential witnesses and establish the details and causes of what occurred.
The detained man will be brought to court for interrogation and the determination of applicable custodial measures.
