The Judicial Police arrested a 59-year-old man in Nazaré, a municipality in the district of Leiria, for a blackmail crime committed at the end of last year. The suspect forced a person to transfer him money, threatening to make public images and conversations of a personal nature that had been exchanged in an online environment.
The total amount that the defendant obtained through this practice amounts to 16,000 euros. The PJ states that the detainee has no record of previous convictions, but there is suspicion that he may have acted in a similar manner on other occasions.
The case falls within the phenomenon known as "sextortion", in which perpetrators exploit intimate content to extort victims. The suspect will now be brought before a judge so that coercive measures to be applied can be defined.
