A 59-year-old man was apprehended by police on Friday in São João da Madeira, accused of beating his 50-year-old wife inside their home.

A 59-year-old resident was captured by PSP officers on Friday night in the municipality of São João da Madeira, following a report of domestic abuse. The call alerted authorities to a violent altercation taking place at the couple's home, where the man lived with his 50-year-old wife, according to Correio da Manhã.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers from a community policing unit observed signs of injury on the victim's face, notably in the forehead area. Based on the evidence gathered, they restrained the partner and took him to the police station, whilst the injured woman was later transported to a regional healthcare centre for medical examination.
The defendant, who is facing other investigations for similar conduct, remained in police custody throughout the weekend, in a measure designed to ensure the victim's safety. The following day, he was questioned by a judge who decided to keep him in preventative custody.
