Two citizens, aged 44 and 47, were detained on Pico island, suspected of the crime of attempted murder. The victim, a 55-year-old man, was brutally assaulted on 1 May at his own home.
According to the authorities, the conflict arose when the resident decided to shelter a woman who had separated from one of the assailants. The woman sought protection from this man, alleging that she had been a victim of domestic abuse.
That night in May, the two detainees went to the victim's residence and struck him violently with an object capable of causing serious injury. The injured party suffered trauma to the head and brain area and bruising scattered across his body.
The security forces proceeded to apprehend the suspects outside of flagrante delicto, executing judicial orders that had been previously issued. The court decided that both must report regularly to the police stations in the area where they reside and cannot contact or approach the assaulted man.
The case was handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office of São Roque do Pico.
