Two individuals, aged 44 and 47, were detained on Saturday on Pico, Azores, accused of attempting to kill a 55-year-old man who had given shelter to the ex-wife of one of them. A joint operation by the Judicial Police and the PSP resulted in the capture of the suspects outside of flagrante delicto, through the execution of judicial warrants.

The incident occurred on 1 May, when the two travelled to the victim's house and assaulted him with a heavy instrument. The 55-year-old man suffered injuries to the head and contusions throughout his body.

According to the Judicial Police, the motive for the attack lies in the fact that the victim had taken in at his residence the ex-partner of the younger suspect. The woman is said to have fled to that house due to alleged episodes of domestic violence.

On Monday, the two were subjected to their first judicial interrogation. The precautionary measure imposed includes regular appearances before the police authorities in the area where they reside, as well as a prohibition on contacting or approaching the injured party.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of São Roque do Pico is coordinating the investigation.
