Two Portuguese citizens detained in Indonesia for cocaine trafficking have been convicted and sentenced to 20 and 13 and a half years in prison, lawyer Miguel Matias confirmed to news agency Lusa. Matias represents defendant Rui Viana, who received the lighter sentence.
"Compared to what we feared, the death penalty, these sentences, despite being heavy, were a relief," Matias stated, recalling that drug trafficking in Indonesia can be punished with capital punishment.
According to rtp.pt, the lawyer stressed that the next step is to "work" to ensure both convicted men serve their sentences in Portugal.
The two Portuguese nationals had been detained in March in Indonesia after being caught transporting liquid cocaine concealed in shampoo bottles.
