During the early hours of Sunday, between four and eight o'clock, the Guarda Nacional Republicana carried out a large-scale operation in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, in the context of the Popular Saints' Festivities. The operation resulted in the apprehension of 78 individuals and the detection of 264 motorists in a state of intoxication. Source: Correio da Manhã
The vast majority of those arrested — 66 in total — were intercepted whilst driving with alcohol levels exceeding legal limits. Additionally, seven people were taken into custody for driving without the necessary documentation. A further five arrests were related to criminal offences of a different nature.
One of the most serious cases involved a 36-year-old man of foreign nationality. This citizen was being sought under a European Detention Warrant, issued in order for him to serve a prison sentence for involvement in illegal drug trafficking. After being captured, he will be brought before the Court of Appeal of Lisbon.
The initiative was planned and executed by the National Traffic Unit, mobilising 164 officers of the force. The intensive inspection took place during the hours of greatest nocturnal movement, taking advantage of the festive period during which there is usually an increase in alcoholic beverage consumption and vehicular traffic.
The objective of the operation was to reinforce road control and ensure the protection of citizens during the popular festivities, one of the times of year when security forces strengthen their presence in the capital.
