GNR arrests six suspects in Olhão for violent robberies against elderly people
Six people were arrested in two GNR operations in the Quelfes area, Olhão, for crimes of aggravated robbery and qualified theft against elderly and vulnerable people.
Six arrested in Olhão in violent robbery network targeting elderly and vulnerable people
Six people were arrested at two separate times in a GNR operation in the Quelfes area, Olhão, reported Correio da Manhã. The investigation targeted an organised network suspected of committing crimes of aggravated robbery and qualified theft against elderly and vulnerable people in the municipalities of Olhão and Faro over recent months.
The operation received reinforcement from PSP units. The GNR held a press conference to provide further details about the case.
Organised network using serious physical violence
During the investigation, GNR personnel gathered evidence of the existence of an organised network dedicated to robbery using serious physical violence against elderly and vulnerable people, according to a Guarda statement. The evidence gathered justified the issuing of six arrest warrants outside of flagrante delicto, six domestic search warrants and five non-domestic search warrants, executed between Monday and Wednesday.
First phase: three men arrested on 6 July
The first operation, carried out on Monday, 6 July, resulted in the arrest of three men — two aged 19 and one aged 23 — "strongly suspected of committing various robberies and qualified thefts", the GNR specified.
The three suspects were presented for their first judicial hearing at Faro Court. The two 19-year-old youths were remanded in custody; the 23-year-old man was ordered to report daily to authorities in his area of residence.
Second phase: three more arrested on Wednesday
On Wednesday, the GNR launched a second operation that led to the arrest of two men, aged 27 and 46, and a woman, aged 44. All are "strongly suspected of committing robberies using serious physical violence, directed especially against vulnerable and elderly people", the Guarda emphasised.
The three arrested in the second phase will still be presented in court for their first judicial hearing and possible application of precautionary measures, the GNR indicated.
