Suspect took minor to isolated location after contact on dating website

A 21-year-old man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in an incident that occurred in May in Vila Nova de Gaia, according to observador.pt citing information from the Judicial Police (PJ).

The investigation began with a report filed by the victim's school after the minor failed to attend classes and her whereabouts were unknown. As officers were heading to the educational establishment, the girl was already returning to the location.

"When the police officers were arriving at the school, the minor was also returning, at which point she reported having met, several days earlier, a man on a dating website with whom she had been that day," the PJ stated.

According to the authorities, the minor also indicated that during that meeting, the suspect had taken her by car to an isolated location, where they subsequently engaged in sexual activity.

The detainee has no criminal record and is to be brought before the competent judicial authorities for his first judicial questioning and the application of restraining measures.
