Man, 31, arrested in Amadora after firing at PSP officers while fleeing
A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Amadora following a foot pursuit during which the suspect fired at police officers. He was remanded in custody after his first hearing.
Suspect pointed gun at 3-year-old child before fleeing police
The Metropolitan Command of Lisbon of the PSP arrested a 31-year-old man in Amadora following a foot pursuit in which the suspect fired in the direction of officers, according to a report on tvi.iol.pt on Wednesday.
The incident began on Monday when a woman who was with her minor children in a park in Amadora contacted officers from the Criminal Investigation Squad of the PSP. According to the police statement, an acquaintance of hers approached and pointed a pistol at one of the children, aged 3.
Based on the physical description and clothing of the suspect, the officers located the man on an adjacent street. Upon noticing the police presence, the suspect began to flee on foot, followed by the officers.
During the pursuit, "the suspect turned around, pointed the weapon at the officers closest to him and fired in their direction, then continuing to run and managing to evade arrest," the PSP stated in the same note.
The officers resorted to service weapons and fired shots into the air, but chose not to directly target the suspect. The reason, the PSP explained, was the presence of "many pedestrians in the garden, namely children," which represented a risk of being hit.
The Judicial Police were called to the scene and recovered the casing from the shot fired by the suspect, which was 6.35mm calibre.
At 01h30, the man was located hiding at his partner's house and intercepted by the PSP. Following investigative procedures that made it possible to gather evidence identifying him as the author of the shots, arrest was ordered outside of flagrante delicto, by warrant of criminal police.
Presented for his first hearing before a judicial authority, the detainee was ordered to be remanded in custody, the most serious coercive measure provided for by law.
