Knife blow to abdomen after exchange of words at industrial facility

A 50-year-old man was arrested in Ponte de Lima on suspicion of attempting to kill a superior with a work knife at a meat-cutting and deboning factory, according to observador.pt based on a statement from the Judicial Police (PJ).

According to the PJ, "the facts occurred inside an industrial meat-cutting and deboning facility where the suspect carried out his duties". The suspect, "after a brief exchange of words with a superior, using a work knife, in an unexpected and sudden manner, struck a blow to his abdomen".

After the attack, the victim managed to escape. The suspect went outside the building to look for him and, not having found him, fled. The incident occurred in a parish in Ponte de Lima, in the district of Viana do Castelo.

Hours later, the suspect presented himself at Ponte de Lima Territorial Post of the GNR. The PJ, through the Criminal Investigation Department in Braga, immediately undertook several procedures that allowed them to gather "strong evidence regarding authorship of the facts" and proceed with the arrest of the suspect.

The man is "strongly suspected of the crime of attempted aggravated homicide, using a white weapon", committed on Wednesday, the PJ specifies.

The victim underwent urgent surgical intervention "given the risk to life". The wound, the PJ describes, was "quite extensive and deep", affecting "all abdominal muscle" and "only by mere chance did not lacerate any organ".
