Man aged 54 held in preventive custody for violence against mother in Lisbon
A 54-year-old man was detained by Lisbon police for domestic violence against his mother, a 79-year-old woman. The suspect, who has been unemployed for approximately 12 years, was placed in preventive custody after being brought before a judge. The detention occurred on Wednesday of last week and was disclosed on Monday.
According to the PSP, the perpetrator lived with the victim for approximately a decade. The woman, in addition to her advanced age, suffers from diabetes and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which makes her particularly vulnerable.
Police indicated that the man, an excessive consumer of alcoholic beverages, insulted and humiliated his mother on a recurring basis, even expressing a wish for her death.
In an episode that occurred on 5 July, the victim dropped her son's glass of wine, breaking it. Despite giving him another glass, the suspect became irritated and threw it in the direction of his mother, continuing to insult her.
Frightened, the elderly woman left the house for a few moments. Upon returning, the level of hostility increased. The man threw dishes and told her to leave the home. In that same episode, he apparently also threatened his mother with death and delivered two punches to her head, causing her to fall to the ground.
