A man in his sixties was arrested by the Judicial Police in the Tábua area, district of Coimbra, on suspicion of causing a fire in a caravan during an episode of domestic violence.

A 61-year-old resident was arrested on Thursday by the Judicial Police following a fire in a caravan in the Tábua area, in the district of Coimbra. The fire is believed to have been deliberately started on Wednesday in a domestic violence incident.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office for the Centre region, the man in his sixties believed that his partner was sleeping inside the vehicle, which was parked in the yard of the suspect's residence. The flames completely destroyed the structure of the caravan.
Authorities indicate that the incident resulted from disagreements in the couple's relationship, intensified by frequent alcohol consumption. The suspect's conduct exposed human lives, neighbouring properties and an extensive area of forestland to danger.
The swift action of the Vila Nova de Oliveirinha Volunteer Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading and causing more serious damage.
The individual had previous records linked to domestic violence situations. He is to be brought before a court for preliminary questioning and possible imposition of precautionary measures.
