A 34-year-old man has been detained by the Judicial Police (PJ) on suspicion of having caused three forest fires in the municipality of Sintra, in Lisbon district. The fires occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, placing several residential properties at risk, the PJ said in a statement.
The suspect, a resident of the area, allegedly used a lighter to start the flames in scrubland areas. According to the police statement, the damage was not greater because the fires were detected early and combated effectively by firefighters.
The detainee will be presented for initial judicial questioning so that appropriate restraining measures may be applied to him.
