A 26-year-old Irish man was arrested on Monday afternoon at Humberto Delgado airport in Lisbon after allegedly assaulting several officers from the Public Security Police (PSP). The incident occurred shortly after 4pm in the baggage reclaim area, according to information released by the Portuguese authorities.
According to the PSP, the suspect allegedly first assaulted an employee of Menzies Aviation near the Versailles café, located on the fifth floor of the terminal. When officers arrived at the scene to intervene, the individual allegedly adopted an "extremely violent and aggressive" attitude, physically attacking the police officers who were attempting to restore order and restrain him.
As a result of the assaults, the PSP officers sustained injuries considered serious, including trauma and facial wounds, which required medical treatment. The police confirmed that the detainee was transported to temporary custody facilities in Lisbon and is to be brought before a court.
Images of the moment in which the young man apparently attacks another person were shared on social media during the evening. The Portuguese authorities emphasised that "assaulting an officer of the law is unacceptable and constitutes an attack on the proper performance of police functions and the rule of law".
Luís Neves, Portugal's Minister for Internal Administration, described the violence as "absolutely unacceptable". The PSP stated that it will continue to act firmly against this type of behaviour, holding its perpetrators criminally responsible.
