An 83-year-old man was detained for assaulting a police officer during a check for walking a dog without a lead, after initially refusing to identify himself.

A septuagenarian aged 83 was detained on 2 July in the parish of Vila Franca de Xira, accused of assaulting a PSP officer. The incident began when police, on routine patrol in the area, noticed the man walking a dog without a collar or lead.
Upon being approached by the officers, the elderly man refused to provide his identification, claiming he did not possess documentation. His attitude quickly became hostile, shouting loudly in order to draw the attention of people passing in the street. He even invoked his advanced age as an argument to contest the police action.
Faced with this refusal, one of the officers informed the man that such behaviour constituted qualified disobedience. To resolve the situation, the officer decided to accompany him to his home in order to proceed with identification.
At the moment they reached the building entrance, the suspect surprised the officer with a sudden attack, delivering a punch with both hands that struck the officer's thorax and mouth area, causing him pain. The elderly man also attempted to crush the officer's foot by slamming the building door.
Given this physical assault, the officer proceeded to detain the individual, who offered active resistance during restraint, which constituted the crime of coercion and resistance to an official.
After subduing the assailant, the officer discovered an envelope on the ground containing the elderly man's personal documents. Confronted with the evidence, the detainee ultimately confessed that he had possessed the documents from the beginning of the contact with the authorities and that he went home with the intention of evading identification, thereby committing the offence of disobedience.
The octogenarian remains at the facilities of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, awaiting his first court hearing for the determination of detention measures.
