A 40-year-old British citizen was arrested in Cascais after gunshots in a building near Estoril police station led authorities to discover a vast collection of military weapons, explosives and grenades at his residence.

Residents of a seven-storey building next to Estoril police station in Cascais contacted authorities after hearing detonations from inside the building. The gunshots, which may have been fired from a machine gun, alerted the PSP, which launched an operation using specialist units.
Officers went to the residence of a 40-year-old British national, who shared the flat with his mother, an elderly woman. The intervention took place without confrontation. However, a search of the property revealed an impressive military collection: several dozen weapons of military calibre, projectiles, hand grenades and explosive material — all items whose use and possession by civilians is expressly prohibited by law.
In light of the discovery, the PSP arrested the suspect on the spot. The detainee did not explain to investigators why he possessed this equipment. Given the quantity and type of material seized, canine units and specialists in explosive device neutralisation were deployed, who carried out an exhaustive and lengthy inventory of the weapons.
The case was also referred to the Judicial Police, which now leads the investigation in collaboration with the PSP. The arrested man will be brought before a judge.
