Filipe Azevedo, 51, has been charged by the Public Prosecutor's Office with aggravated homicide after killing Teresa Oliveira, 71, with blows from a spade to the head over a debt of €35.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has charged Filipe Azevedo, 51 years old, with the crime of aggravated homicide. The suspect allegedly murdered Teresa Oliveira, a 71-year-old widow, on the morning of 15 December last year, in the locality of Adaúfe, in the municipality of Braga.
The victim had hired the defendant to carry out minor repairs to her residence and garden. Payment for the services, valued at €35, was not made immediately. On the day of the crime, around 11.00 am, the man went to the elderly woman's house in a rage and began kicking the gate demanding the amount owed.
When the woman opened the gate, she was brutally attacked with the spade itself to the head. The blows were so violent that they disfigured her face and destroyed her skull, causing the loss of much of her brain matter. Before leaving the scene, the attacker dragged the victim's legs with his feet, which were preventing the gate from closing.
The body was only found in the afternoon of the following day, after a neighbour alerted the authorities on noticing the unusual absence of movement at the property. The body was on the ground of the yard, near the entrance. The Judicial Police in Braga detained the suspect the day after the crime. He is currently held in preventive custody.
The Public Prosecutor's Office considers that, despite the defendant suffering from an intellectual development disorder, his personality presents "marked dangerousness". In the charge, it states there is "well-founded concern that he may go on to commit identical acts, should he not be compelled to undergo psychiatric treatment".
