An individual was detained by PSP police in Faro for violently robbing the bag of a 67-year-old man in the Algarve city. The elderly man fell during the assault and had to be taken to a health facility.
The crime took place last Friday. The alleged robber approached the victim on the street and engaged in brief verbal contact. When the septuagenarian's attention was diverted, the attacker forcibly snatched his bag and fled.
The fall caused by the attack resulted in injuries that required medical attention at a hospital. The bag contained a mobile phone, personal documents and approximately 530 euros in cash. The bag was later found in the vicinity of the crime scene, but the telephone and money disappeared.
PSP police's Criminal Investigation Unit in Faro initiated inquiries that led to the identification of the alleged perpetrator. On Sunday, a warrant for arrest was executed outside of flagrante delicto.
The defendant was brought before the court for the initial interrogation, where he was remanded in preventive custody.
