The main person responsible for an organisation dedicated to the trade in illicit substances in the Lisbon area has been sentenced to a custodial prison sentence. The group, which media outlets dubbed the "Uber of Drugs", used a system of direct contacts between suppliers and buyers, relying on telephone calls and messages to arrange orders, prices and meeting points.
The police operation, conducted over twelve months, centred on Nuno Ricardo Nogueira dos Santos, considered the head of the structure. According to the findings of the authorities, the scheme operated in an organised manner, supplying products to a wide range of consumers, which included everything from occasional users to professionals from various sectors, some with public prominence, although not all were the subject of charges.
During the searches, PSP collected various types of narcotics, namely cocaine, MDMA, LSD and ketamine, along with synthetic drugs. Packaging materials and significant amounts of cash were also confiscated. The data collected indicated a stable and recurring supply chain in the capital area.
In court, the main defendant was punished with effective imprisonment. Other individuals linked to the case received lighter sentences, such as suspended sentences, and there were also those who were released due to lack of conclusive evidence. The disclosure of intercepted telephone conversations and the mention of media personalities, albeit indirect, made the trial particularly newsworthy, generating discussion about the limits of privacy, drug use and the scope of criminal investigations.
