Montenegro maintains Luís Neves despite Public Prosecutor pressure
Prime Minister Luís Montenegro maintains confidence in Luís Neves, national director of the PSP, despite the Public Prosecutor's Office having opened five processes related to controversies involving the person responsible for internal security, according to Observador and other outlets cited by Google News PT.
The Attorney General's Office confirmed the existence of five ongoing processes, among which one is related to the use of a vehicle belonging to a drug trafficker. Luís Neves himself declared publicly that he "welcomes all investigations", according to RTP.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) is at the centre of at least three separate inquiries conducted by the Public Prosecutor's Office, according to information advanced by rtp.pt. Público also reported what it described as "the four captures" of Luís Neves, in a reference to the successive controversies that have marked his tenure.
Montenegro's position contrasts with the intensity of judicial and media attention surrounding the PSP director. The government has announced no measure of suspension or replacement of the post, maintaining Neves in office during the course of the investigations.
The Attorney General's Office has not publicly detailed the status of each of the five processes nor indicated deadlines for any procedural decisions.
