Public Prosecutor opposes imprisonment of Ricardo Salgado
At a hearing that took place on Tuesday, magistrate Rui Batista, representing the Public Prosecutor's Office, spoke out against the execution of the prison sentence to which former banker Ricardo Salgado was convicted. The session is part of the cumulative proceedings concerning the convictions imposed on the former financial manager.
Salgado was sentenced to six years and three months in one case and eight years in another. The prosecutor argued that forcing the defendant to a prison facility would be incompatible with respect for human dignity. The Public Prosecutor's representative grounded his position in the defendant's clinical condition, as he suffers from Alzheimer's disease, asserting that it would be a "pointless act" to apply a sanction that the convicted person does not understand.
The magistrate's argument focused on the protection of the defendant's fundamental rights, given his deteriorated health condition.
