Prosecutors appeal Rui Pinto acquittal and question judges
The decision that freed Rui Pinto is being challenged by the Public Ministry. The representatives of the Public Ministry, Vera Camacho and André Ribeiro da Silva, filed an appeal with the Lisbon Court of Appeal, contesting the sentence that acquitted the author of the Football Leaks information leaks.
In the appeal, dated the beginning of this week, the prosecutors argue that splitting the proceedings into several parts was an essential and appropriate measure to prevent the formation of a gigantic and uncontrollable case. They further argue that the separation was proportional to the complexity of the case.
The Public Ministry magistrates do not spare criticism of the panel of judges that delivered the acquittal, considering that the reasoning of the sentence does not correspond to the facts. In addition, they point the finger at the Judicial Police, censuring the slowness of the criminal investigation.
Rui Pinto was freed from 241 charges at first instance, in a proceeding that garnered significant media attention due to the disclosure of sensitive documents from the football world.
