Police operation in Leiria results in seven arrests for drug trafficking

A security forces operation led to the arrest of seven men in an area near Leiria on Wednesday. The operation, conducted by the local PSP District Command, aimed to dismantle a drug trafficking network operating in a neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city.

The detainees are aged between 22 and 29. One of them was caught in the act; the others were arrested on the basis of detention warrants issued as part of an investigation that began last year. All suspects had prior criminal records related to the illegal sale of narcotics.

During interventions at residences, officers collected €17,900.40 in cash. Additionally, 29.08 grammes of hashish — sufficient for 59 doses — and 5.62 grammes of cocaine, corresponding to 22 doses, were confiscated. The seized material also included eleven mobile phones, 46 packets of unstamped tobacco, three bladed weapons and various utensils used, according to the authorities, to weigh and package the substances.

The operation mobilised approximately eighty police officers, with reinforcements from the commands in Lisbon, Santarém and Coimbra. The suspects will be heard in court on Friday for their initial judicial questioning.

The PSP emphasised, in a statement released on Wednesday, that this initiative is part of its permanent crime prevention and suppression plan, reinforcing the institution's commitment to safeguarding public safety and combating drug trafficking.
