Portuguese authorities have handed over to Brazilian authorities a 41-year-old man sentenced to 14 years in prison for participation in the murder of a media professional. The handover took place following his detention in Caldas da Rainha on 14 January; the prisoner is now in a correctional facility in Goiás.
The individual had lived in Portugal with valid documentation since 2018, having remained in the country during earlier periods. He worked sporadically in construction and led an evangelical congregation in Caldas da Rainha, where he broadcast recordings of religious ceremonies on the internet.
The man was one of four participants in the shooting execution of journalist Valério Luiz, a crime that occurred in 2012. The motive is supposedly linked to critical comments that the victim had made about the leadership of Atlético Goianiense football club. Former sports executive Maurício Borges Sampaio and Ademá Figueiredo, the presumed perpetrator, are both serving 16-year sentences. The fourth individual, Urbano Malta, remains at large.
