Portuguese police seise more than 3 tonnes of cocaine at Olhão resort

On Saturday, at the resort in southern Portugal in Olhão, police agents confiscated more than 3 tonnes of cocaine. The traffickers were not detained.

According to data from local services, the seized consignment is among the largest drug shipments confiscated this year. The cocaine was found in a goods vehicle, where 91 packages containing the substance were hidden.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle for inspection, the driver did not comply with orders, abandoned the vehicle and disappeared in an unknown direction. Investigators suspect that behind the smuggling may be members of one of the international criminal groups operating in the Iberian Peninsula.

The results of the investigation show that the drugs first arrived at one of the nearby beaches by sea, and were then loaded into the goods vehicle.

Olhão is a popular tourist parish that is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year. Nearby is Faro international airport.
