A teacher at the Salesian School in Funchal was arrested on Monday by the Judicial Police, five months after being preventively suspended for alleged inappropriate behaviour towards students. The teacher was held awaiting presentation to court for an initial judicial interrogation as a detained suspect, where coercive measures will be determined.
The case originated in February of this year, when parents of students reported complaints from their children to the school management about the teacher's behaviour. The institution confirmed the situation and opened an internal investigation, while simultaneously deciding to preventively suspend the teacher and initiate disciplinary proceedings.
Father José Gomes, the school's director, stated at the time that the institution was "cooperating fully with the competent authorities in the investigation and clarification of events" and that "as a precaution, the institution's management decided to preventively suspend the teacher in question and open disciplinary proceedings".
The case generated surprise within the school community, since the teacher was well regarded by colleagues, despite having been recently hired. With the case handed over to the Public Prosecutor's Office and following the completion of investigative steps, the Judicial Police have now proceeded with the arrest of the suspect.
