Lisbon's second instance court has upheld the 25-year prison sentence imposed on a 33-year-old man who murdered three people in a barbershop in the Penha de França neighbourhood. The decision was made public on Tuesday, as reported by the newspaper Correio da Manhã.
The facts date back to 2 October 2024, when the convicted man entered the commercial establishment "Granda Pente" with a firearm. Inside, he opened fire at the professional working there. At the establishment's doorway, he fatally wounded a man who was there and his partner. An employee of the premises was also shot, but survived without injuries.
The three victims died on the spot. They were Carlos Pina, the barber, and Fernanda Júlia da Silva and Bruno Neto, a couple. After the shots, the attacker fled, and was captured seven days later in the Setúbal region.
During the trial, it was revealed that the defendant suffered from schizophrenia. However, experts from the Institute of Forensic Medicine found that he had full capacity to stand trial. The judges of the Court of Appeal determined that the 25-year sentence "is neither excessive nor disproportionate, but moderate given the seriousness of the facts considered as a whole", adding that only the legal maximum prevented an even more severe sentence.
