Court of Appeal halts inquiry into Marcelo in the Portuguese-Brazilian twins case
The Court of Appeal has decided to suspend the investigation into former President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in the Portuguese-Brazilian twins case, according to jornaleconomico.sapo.pt, citing information from CNN.
The request for an investigation had been submitted in 2024 by the Central Criminal Investigation Court in Lisbon. The two Public Ministry prosecutors who examined the case concluded there was no evidence of crime in the conduct of the then President of the Republic and considered the investigation unnecessary.
The case returned to the centre of debate this week after the Attorney General's Office announced that the Public Ministry had brought charges against four people for abuse of office, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of power. The defendants are former State Secretary for Health António Lacerda Sales, the son of the former President Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, the former clinical director of Santa Maria Hospital Luís Pinheiro, and the mother of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa responded publicly to the case during this week. "In accordance with the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, nobody is above the Constitution and the Law itself, justice is independent in the exercise of its function and must treat all citizens equally," he stated in a note sent to the Lusa news agency, adding that "nobody is above the law".
At the root of the case is the treatment of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon with the drug Zolgensma in 2019.
