A 60-year-old man was captured by the Judicial Police in the city of Sertã, in the district of Castelo Branco, accused of taking the life of an 87-year-old resident in Lisbon in April 2024, with the intention of stealing his possessions.
The victim's body was discovered in the residence where he lived alone, already in an advanced state of decomposition. The body showed bound limbs and evidence of serious assault, according to a police force statement to the press, including Observador.
The victim was known to carry money on him, a factor that is believed to have attracted the attacker. The Judicial Police managed to track the individual to Sertã, the location to which he fled after the incident.
The detainee has a history of similar crimes against elderly people. During interrogation, he took responsibility for the act, justifying himself with financial problems stemming from a gambling addiction. On the eve of the crime, he is believed to have lost substantial sums on online gambling sites.
He now stands accused of qualified homicide and robbery. He will be brought before the Criminal Investigation Court of the capital for initial interrogation and determination of precautionary measures. The investigation is being handled by the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action in Lisbon.
