29-year-old coach detained for child sexual abuse in Vila Real de Santo António

The Judicial Police detained a 29-year-old coach in the Algarve suspected of sexually abusing a 12-year-old child in a sports context.

The Judicial Police (PJ) detained, on Monday, 6 July, a 29-year-old coach in Vila Real de Santo António, in the Algarve, suspected of committing crimes of child sexual abuse. According to Google News PT — Crime (pt), the identified victim is 12 years old.

According to the PJ, the facts occurred in the context of sports education directed by the suspect, who "took advantage of the ascendancy and trust he held, through electronic sharing of images and videos of exhibitionism (by the attacker himself) in sexual acts". The police also state in a statement that it was "possible to identify other victims" of the suspect.

In the course of proceedings, "solid elements of evidence" were gathered that supported the issue of warrants for home searches and detention outside of flagrante delicto. The inquiry is being handled by the DIAP of Vila Real de Santo António.

During the home search, PJ inspectors seized "important evidentiary elements", with suspicion of the existence of other child victims. The coach will be presented to the competent judicial authority for judicial interrogation and application of coercive measures.

This is the second recent detention of professionals in regular contact with minors. In the previous week, the PJ detained a music teacher at a school in Sintra, also charged with the crime of child sexual abuse.
