Beja Court postpones ruling in double homicide case to September
The court in Beja district has scheduled 8 September for the reading of the ruling in the double homicide case that occurred in Baleizão, in Beja district. The decision to postpone the judgement until after the judicial recess period was explained on Friday by the magistrates.
The case involves a couple, Fernando and Mónica, sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of their employers in April 2023. The crime was committed with great violence, by beating. Three years after the crime, the two defendants remain at liberty.
The defence of the couple, assured by solicitor Pedro Pestana, has appealed on various occasions, arguing that the autopsy did not determine the exact cause of death of the victims and requesting acquittal.
According to the judges, the case was marked by successive appeals and procedural incidents. Moreover, the Évora Court of Appeal determined, on two separate occasions, the preparation of new rulings, which contributed to the delay.
The magistrates clarified that the date chosen for the reading of the decision does not alter, in itself, the procedural situation of the defendants.
