A 55-year-old man lost his life in the early hours of Wednesday in Câmara de Lobos, on the island of Madeira, from injuries inflicted by a bladed weapon. The incident is believed to have occurred around 06:30, following a confrontation between the victim and the assailant, in the wake of an attempted robbery of a local business.

The crime occurred near the Nova Cidade building, in the centre of that locality. According to information from the regional press, local firefighters were called to assist the man, who was in cardio-respiratory arrest. Still showing vital signs, he was transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal, but ultimately did not survive his injuries.

The presumed killer fled the scene, but was captured by the PSP several hours later. He is currently in detention by the authorities and will be brought before a magistrate for a decision on which precautionary measures to apply.

The Judicial Police of Madeira is expected to assume direction of the investigation, with the aim of clarifying all the circumstances of the case.
