Bucharest Court of Appeal: judges divided in Călin Georgescu case
Two judges of the Bucharest Court of Appeal failed to agree on the preventive measure requested by DIICOT. A third magistrate will decide the fate of the former presidential candidate.
Disagreement at Court of Appeal in case of former presidential candidate
Magistrates at the Bucharest Court of Appeal remained in deliberation in a divided panel in the case of Călin Georgescu, according to Gândul. The two judges failed to reach agreement on the preventive measure requested by DIICOT, with a third magistrate to resolve the matter — and, implicitly, whether the former presidential candidate will be sent into custody.
"A difference of opinion means there were different views between the two judges. The fact that we had three judges before us was good — the more judges, the better," declared Bogdan Petre, Georgescu's lawyer, as he left the court.
Petre clarified that sums of money were not discussed at the hearing and that the procedure was resumed under normal conditions.
Outside, dozens of supporters greeted Georgescu chanting "Second round, come back!", "Călin, innocent!", "Freedom!" and "Down with dictatorship!". The former candidate spoke only a few words to the crowd: "Everything around is God, God is everything, is in fact existence itself", after which he made no further statements.
The case in which DIICOT requested the arrest of Călin Georgescu thus remains awaiting the decision of the expanded panel. The decision of the magistrate designated to resolve the disagreement will determine whether the arrest request is granted or rejected.
