Romanian authorities are expanding the investigation into brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate, adding charges of incitement to hatred and discrimination against women to the existing charges.
Fresh charges brought against Tate brothers in Romania
The criminal investigation into brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate is expanding with new charges. The two, American and British citizens, have been under investigation in Romania since December 2022 for serious offences.
Initially, DIICOT – the unit specialising in combating organised crime and terrorism – placed them under investigation for rape of minors, organised human trafficking and money laundering. Now, prosecutors are adding to the file a charge of incitement to hatred and discrimination against women.
According to Reuters, investigators allege that Andrew Tate used social media platforms to incite his followers against women, through statements made during the period 2021–2024. He denies these allegations, characterising them as an attempt to judge him for jokes made in his podcasts and invoking freedom of expression.
In addition to the problems in Romania, Andrew Tate also has an arrest warrant issued in Britain, where he is being investigated for a further ten offences, including rape and human trafficking. The brothers deny all charges brought against them.
Following the completion of proceedings in Romania, the two are to be extradited to the United Kingdom.
